I believe most of us are genuinely trying our best. We visit our doctors, do what they say, try to follow sound health advice (at least most some of the time), and otherwise live our lives.

Why is it so complicated to know what to eat, let alone get to the gym, and do everything else we’re told we must to be healthy?

We’re bombarded with endless streams of conflicting health advice, advertisements and ultra-processed foods. Investors own the processed food companies that make the highly addictive foods we’re biologically powerless to resist AND own the pharmaceutical companies that sell treatments for diseases caused by their foods.

They literally get rich making us sick and then earn even more money selling us drugs we take for life to manage the symptoms caused by what we ate. Companies make billions of dollars by robbing us of our health.

We have an epidemic of chronic disease. A whopping 44% of us are obese. 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes (damagingly high blood sugar). Only 12.2% of Americans are believed to be metabolically healthy (judged by 5 key health metrics). That’s a paltry 1 in 8 of us! Clearly what we’re doing and our medical system aren’t working.

I think most people are frustrated, exhausted and have basically given up and simply hope they’ll get lucky and their health will be there for them when the time comes - kind of like Social Security. We all “pay into it” by trying to eat less and move more, putting extra veggies on our plates, going for our annual physicals, etc. Sadly, this just isn’t enough any longer if you want to be healthy as you age.

You have to take proactive steps now to “bank” more health for later. Think of it like investing in a Health IRA! Just like you save up and make regular deposits for years into an IRA or 401(k) to fund a secure and enjoyable retirement, we have to make investments every day to “fund” our health-span.

That’s why I created SUPPLEMENTAL WISDOM. About 15 years ago, I got a serious wake up call that my life-span could be cut short by a digestive cancer, like what happened to my father and grandfather. Since then, I’ve worked to educate myself on the simple actions we can take each day to get healthy and stay that way. For almost a decade now, I’ve been sharing those lessons as a certified nutrition coach.

My passion is helping people in their 40’s to 60’s because time is of the essence for us. We lost way too many of our prime years to completely wrong nutrition guidance from our government and doctors. If we take action now, we can change the trajectory for the rest of our lives. The best time to take sensible and effective health advice was in our youth. The next best time is today!
